Suffolk Constabulary said police were called shortly after 1.20am to reports of a two-vehicle collision on the B1112 where a grey BMW was in collision with a white Peugeot 308.

“Police, fire, the ambulance service, air ambulance and a volunteer paramedic from Suffolk Accident Rescue Service (SARS), were all in attendance to the incident,” said the force.

“The driver and passenger of the Peugeot, two male police officers, were taken to Addenbrookes Hospital by land ambulance having sustained life-threatening injuries.”

The driver of the BMW, a man aged in his twenties, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink or drugs.

“He was taken to West Suffolk Hospital as a precaution and has since been discharged and taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning, where he remains,” said the force.

Suffolk Constabulary is appealing to any witnesses to the collision, or who may have seen a vehicle matching the descriptions being driven in the area prior to it, to contact the Roads and Armed Policing Team.
