Security strategy is ‘not enough’

The IT trade association Intellect has welcomed the publication of Government’s National Security Strategy but warns that on its own it’s not enough.

Joel Grundy, Intellect’s defence and security manager, said: “We believe this is a sound strategy which will potentially help shape a cohesive response to the security threats facing the UK. However, the strategy on its own is not enough – Government now has to focus on effective implementation or risk it becoming another well-meaning report that ends up sitting on a shelf.

“National security is a critical concern for UK companies. We urge the Government to use this strategy as a way to leverage the experience, innovation and skills of the UK [IT] industry and work with us to implement a comprehensive response to the challenges laid out in this report.

“For example, the strategy correctly identifies cyber warfare and the need for greater transparency and information sharing as key areas. We believe that the UK needs to be prepared for these types of emerging threats, and that the knowledge and expertise of its people is the key to developing effective security.”

Commenting on the launch, ACPO President, Chief Constable Ken Jones, said: “Publication of the National Security Strategy marks the description in one place of the threats and risks we face in the modern world. There is an inter-connected nature to the challenges, issues and impacts thrown up by globalisation, which demands new approaches from the police service as well as from its partners in Government and other agencies. International terrorism and cross-border crime are a major part of these challenges, but the broad mission of the police service means police officers and staff are increasingly pivotal in mastering the breadth of these interconnected issues.

“ACPO will be working with Government on how the police service can support them in addressing these risks.”
