A motorist stopped on the M6 by police could have entered the record books – driving for the last 44 years on a provisional licence. He was caught by the Road Policing Unit of Lancashire Constabulary on the motorway by junction 31. According the force’s Twitter account, the driver had had his provisional licence “since he was 12”. No person under 16 may drive a vehicle on the road. But between the ages of 13 and 16 someone can legally drive a tractor during agricultural, horticultural or forestry field operations – provided the vehicle is fitted with an enclosed, approved safety cab.
