A suspected drink-driver has been charged after an officer was run over while trying to stop him from getting behind the wheel. The off-duty Cheshire Constabulary officer tried to grab the van driver’s keys out of the ignition after challenging him at a petrol station in Middlewich on January 12. The driver then sped off and ran over the officer’s leg, dragging him along the ground for a short distance. The officer sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries. A Middlewich man, 34, has been arrested and charged with dangerous driving, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, failing to stop at the scene of an accident, driving without insurance, driving without a license and making off without payment. He will appear before Crewe Magistrates’ Court on February 14.
