Avon and Somerset Constabulary has signed up to trial Arqiva’s Police Mobile Data Solution.

The fully managed solution enables officers to perform essential data operations, such as checking suspect and vehicle details, address mapping functions and soon the ability to receive briefing documents via their in-car devices.

The trial – which commenced in December 2006 – involves the installation of 14 fixed in-car terminals that interface with the Police National Computer (PNC) and the Voter’s Register, enabling officers to maintain a high level of visibility and efficiency.

Arqiva has provided Avon and Somerset with a dual bearer solution, working over TETRA and GPRS to ensure a seamless data flow as officers move between network coverage areas.

In preparation for the trial, Arqiva also provided a desktop training package for 70 officers and worked alongside trainers from the force to instruct the officers taking part in the trial. The fully-managed solution also includes a support service from Arqiva’s local field maintenance engineers based in Portishead. This close working relationship means that Arqiva can respond quickly to feedback from the officers and optimise the performance of the Mobile Data Solution.

The fully scalable solution also has the potential for added applications such as access to command and control and crime reporting systems.

“This technology is long overdue and we are delighted to be involved in the trial,” commented Ian Steel, project manager for mobile information at Avon and Somerset.

“Arqiva has demonstrated a real understanding of our needs and responded to our feedback, allowing us to assist with the evolution of this product while shaping our own strategy on mobile data use.”

Peter Harris, mobile data product manager at Arqiva added: “We have worked closely with Avon and Somerset to tailor this solution to their individual needs. This is one of a number of trials currently underway with police forces across the UK involving both multiple bearers in TETRA and GPRS as well as multiple devices in the from of Mobile Data Terminals (MDTs) and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs). With its scalability and flexibility we are confident that in time, ours will be the solution of choice to meet the demands of modern policing.”
