New approach sees force receive ‘deluge’ of forensic job applications

A force that received more than 2,000 applications for two apprenticeship posts has thanked engagement with partners and its social media strategy. West Midlands Police (WMP) received so much interest in the vacancies in its forensics team that it had to close the three-week application period early so staff could cope with the “deluge” of submissions. The advert reached more than 3,600 people online and was shared 3,600 times, attracting 2,500 comments from social media users. A spokesperson told Police Professional this success was partially due to targeting adverts at young people through the company CSR Group. They added that WMP changed the phrasing it used on social media so parents were asked to tell their children to apply for the positions. “That propelled local councillors to retweet it,” the spokesperson said. Michelle Painter, head of Forensic Scene Investigation and Major Crime, said: “We were overwhelmed by the popularity of the vacancies, and the applications have included some very strong candidates. “It is heartening to see so many people want to join West Midlands Police. I’m really looking forward to holding the interviews. “While we’re thrilled that over 2,000 young people applied, the reality is there are only two vacancies. A lot of young people who expressed an interest to work for WMP will be disappointed. “We’re now working with HR about other potential career opportunities within the force for unsuccessful applicants.”
