Man dies following police pursuit

Hampshire Constabulary has made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct after a man being pursued by officers died when his van crashed in a field.

The force said its officers were pursuing a silver Ford Transit Connect on the A343 in Stockbridge on Sunday at about 11pm.

After a short time, the vehicle left the carriageway and came to rest in a field on Red Rice Road.

The van was not in collision with another vehicle.

The man, who is in his forties and from Hythe died, in the ambulance en route to hospital. His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Officers had been in the area responding to reports of a burglary in Monxton.
