News of the arrival of the Evora GT410 – which has a starting price of just under £90,000, a supercharged V6 engine, is capable of zero to 60mph in four seconds and has a top speed of 186 mph – caused something of a Twitter storm with some members of the public dismayed over what appeared to be a waste of public funds.

However, the force later clarified that the vehicle has been provided free of charge by Lotus UK and is being used to increase community engagement and raise road safety awareness. It will not be used in operational policing.

It will remain with Devon and Cornwall Police for 12 months before being passed on to another force.

In a final tweet, the RCU said the vehicle, which was recently on display at the Devon County Show, was great for drawing the attention of the “petrol heads” but would be “completely useless as a traffic car – nowhere for cones”.
