A terror investigation has been launched after a man who attempted to force his way into the Eiffel Tower brandishing a knife has reportedly told French police he wanted to attack a soldier. A 19-year-old Frenchman – recently discharged from a psychiatric hospital – was arrested as he tried to enter a secure zone at the famous landmark. Dressed in a Paris Saint-Germain football shirt, the suspect shouted “Allahu Akbar” before he was surrounded by soldiers ordering him to drop his weapon. Ironically, the tower was lit up on Saturday night (August 5) in the football club’s colours to welcome its new £198 million world-record signing Neymar Jr. The tower was evacuated following the incident, and was reopened to tourists as usual on Sunday morning (August 6). A terror investigation has been launched following the attempted attack, and the man remains in custody. France has been in a state of emergency since November 2015 following a series of coordinated terror attacks that left 130 people dead.
