Sir Michael Burton will step down from the Investigatory Powers Tribunal at the end of his term of office on September 26.
Sir Michael has served with the organisation for almost 18 years, having been appointed vice-president on its creation in October 2000.

He was selected as the tribunal’s chair in September 2013 following the retirement of Sir John Mummery.
The tribunal is now seeking expressions of interest from Court of Appeal judges for the appointment of a new president.
A spokesperson said a replacement for Sir Michael will be announced “in due course”.
Lord Chief Justice Lord Burnett of Maldon said: “I am extremely grateful for all of the work Sir Michael has done for the tribunal.

“Sir Michael’s contribution has been substantial, both as president and previously as vice-president. I wish him well in his retirement.”
