Derbyshire Constabulary’s interaction with a man who died following a short period in custody is being investigated. The 42-year-old was arrested on January 7 after a domestic incident in Pleasley. He was taken to Chesterfield custody suite but fell ill and was transferred to the Chesterfield Royal Hospital just hours later. He passed away on Wednesday night (January 10). Derbyshire Constabulary referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which has launched an investigation. Investigators are reviewing CCTV and body worn video camera footage and have taken accounts from the officers and staff involved. A post-mortem examination has already been held. IOPC regional director Derrick Campbell said: “Our sympathies are with the man’s family and everyone else affected by his death. “Our inquiries are at an early stage and we will be carrying out a thorough investigation into the events of Sunday.” A Derbyshire Constabulary spokesperson said: “We would like to offer our condolences to the family and friends of the man who died. “We are assisting the IOPC with their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, and supporting our officers, staff and anyone affected by it.”
