Gloucestershire Constabulary has appointed Ivor Twydell as its new joint-third in command.

After rapidly rising through the ranks in Bedfordshire, Mr Twydell has been made the new assistant chief constable of corporate services.

Currently the chief superintendent in charge of citizen focus with Bedfordshire Police, the 50-year-old is hoping to take up the post at the beginning of June.

He will replace Acting Assistant Chief Constable Steve Ackland and work alongside Assistant Chief Constable of Operations Mick Matthews.

Above him is Chief Constable Dr Tim Brain and two deputy chief constables.

Mr Twydell said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have this opportunity to serve the people of Gloucestershire. I’ve 22 years’ policing experience and they will get the benefits of that.

“I will be bringing all my energy and commitment to the role.”

Born in Luton in 1957, Mr Twydell joined the police service in 1986, aged 28.

Dr Brain said: “I am looking forward to Ivor joining us as soon as possible.

“I’m sure he will bring a new dimension to Gloucestershire Constabulary’s chief officer team.”

Mr Twydell started as a constable in 1986 in Dunstable and was later transferred to Biggleswade.

He transferred to Luton when he was promoted to sergeant and two years later was promoted to inspector.

In 1993 he moved to Bedfordshire Police where he has worked in many different roles.
