A spokesperson for the force said: “We held a minute’s silence at 11am for our friend and colleague Det Con Dave Newton, who tragically died yesterday. He had been battling a short illness, having served with the constabulary for many years as a detective in Crewe.

“He was held in the highest regard by all who knew him and has been described as a close friend who was kind, funny and generous. He will be missed.”

Jamie Thompson, chair of Cheshire Police Federation, added: “Sadly we have lost a colleague and friend DC Dave ‘Newts’ Newton. Dave was something of a legend in Cheshire Police, and those who knew and worked with him knew him to be generous, funny and well loved by all.

“Despite a recent illness Dave remained positive and spent his time still trying to help others. Our thoughts go out to Dave’s family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time. He will be sorely missed by the Cheshire police family.”
