The pair, aged 52 and 21, from Dewsbury in West Yorkshire, are currently being detained by officers while two properties are being searched by forensics officers.

The men were arrested by Counter Terrorism Policing North East on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

Loud bangs were heard in the Savile Town area of Dewsbury on Tuesday (April 3), but the offciers say this was part of the pre-planned operation at the two addresses.

The town has previous links with terrorism and was home to Mohammad Sidique Khan, who led the four-strong gang which killed 52 people in the capital in July 2005.

West Yorkshire Police Superintendent for the Kirklees Area Marianne Huison said: “I understand our local communities will have concerns about this morning’s police activity but I want to offer my reassurance that we will continue to serve and protect the public of West Yorkshire.

“Public safety is our utmost concern.”
