The 26-year-old passed away in the early hours of Monday (July 9) shortly after being arrested in the north of the city.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said he had been involved in a disturbance at licensed premises on the Antrim Road the previous evening, and was taken to Musgrave police station.

The Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland (PONI) has launched an investigation into the circumstances of the man’s death.

The incident at the bar is being investigated by the PSNI.

A spokesman for the PONI said: “Our investigators have been at Musgrave police station throughout the night, and are continuing to gather information about the course of events leading up to the death.

“We will be speaking to all potential witnesses, gathering forensic evidence, reviewing CCTV footage and securing all relevant PSNI documentation.

“A post mortem examination will be conducted in due course. The man’s name has not yet been released.”
