Avon and Somerset Constabulary had phone lines open for just eight hours on March 20 before the 1,100 recruitment application packs were allocated.

The force was recruiting 64 new student police officers and even received a call from someone on holiday in Australia.

The force is undergoing a two-year recruitment process, funded this year by a rise in council tax.
