Chief constable’s gross misconduct hearing resumes
Cheshire Constabulary’s chief constable is facing a gross misconduct panel after being accused of bullying and humiliating fellow staff.
Simon Byrne was suspended last August during the course of an investigation into claims he showed “volatile, unpredictable and offensive” behaviour at work.
On Monday (July 2), Mr Byrne appeared before a panel at Warrington Town Hall for the start of a process expected to last for more than a week.
The chief constable, who denies the allegations, had previously applied for the case against him to be dropped, but his appeal was dismissed by a disciplinary panel in April despite flaws in the investigation into his conduct.
Mr Byrne was reportedly considering lodging a judicial review against the panel’s decision, but police and crime commissioner David Keane confirmed last month that no application had been submitted.
The new hearing is expected to last nine days.
