Dorset Police firearms officers stopped a car containing two men and a woman on Castle Lane West late on Tuesday (August 7).

During the incident, the driver, aged 59, was shot in the arm and remains in hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The second man, aged 36, was arrested at the scene. Both he and the female passenger were unharmed.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) was informed and has attended the scene as well as post incident procedures.

Investigators are now gathering forensic evidence, transmission records, eyewitness accounts and relevant CCTV footage.

Dorset Police said the incident was in relation to a reported serious assault the previous week.

IOPC regional director for Dorset Catrin Evans said: “Our investigation is looking into the planning of the police operation, as well as the circumstances of the shooting itself.

“We are anxious to identify as much information as possible which we will analyse as part of a thorough investigation.

“This incident occurred mid-evening on a busy street, and I’d be grateful for anyone who saw events unfold on Tuesday evening to get in touch with our investigators.”
