Dromey hails 'champion' Baird after retaining Northumbria

Veteran politician Vera Baird is back as the police and crime commissioner (PCC) in Northumbria. 

The former Solicitor General in Gordon Brown's Labour administration polled more than 55 per cent of the votes in Thursday's election in retaining her PCC role. 

The Northumbria PCC results are: Vera Baird (Labour) 180,479, Stewart Thomas Hay (Conservative) 58,713, Melanie Hurst (UKIP) 52,293, Jonathan Charles Wallace (Lib Dem) 34,757. 

Shadow Policing Minister Jack Dromey congratulated his former Commons colleague, calling her a "great champion of combating domestic violence and the abuse of children".
